20 Seconds Jam Entry

Not too sure what to feel on how this game turned out. I originally had a completely separate idea for a game, but I scrapped that more than midway through because I didn't think that game fit well in a 20 second format. Even though the Jam was so long, things came up and I had to somewhat rush this project. I wish I could've come up with more levels and more obstacles, but the time frame I was left with along with my brain being completely out of ideas stopped that from happening. I might go back in some time in the future and add a heap of levels, but even now I'm not sure how many more ideas there are to explore with the foundation I have right now.

Some things I am happy with. I'm happy with how the movement turned out. This is officially the first 'platformer' that I have finished, but I did have some unfinished prototypes of platformers from the past which gave me enough knowledge and experience to know exactly what is needed to make movement feel good. I think the art turned out mostly good, even if theres not really a cohesive theme around the game.

Some things I am not so happy with. I'm not really good at level design, like at all. I couldn't really think of unique and out of the box way to challenge the player. This goes the same for the obstacles. Maybe the issue stems from just having jumping as the only movement mechanic, or the fact that the player is stuck in a box, so there's not much room to move around in the first place. I also am not that happy with the sound design. I started adding sounds at the end of the jam, and at this point my brain was pretty fried and things started getting messy. I wish I could have found good free sound effects online but I really couldn't think of what exactly to look for or where. There's also UI, which I always struggle with, but I think it turned out decently this time around.

Some things I would have changed. I think if I could redo this project, I may have chosen to do it in 3D, since this allows for double the play area (okay that math doesn't really check out, but whatever) and added more movement options, like a dive. I mean, really thinking about it, this is where I should have started with the project, since one of my favorite games in the past was Fall Guys :P

I'm glad that I pushed myself to finish this game. I could have easily decided to give up since I had wasted most of my jam time, and I almost did. But I decided that even if the game isn't that good, I want to get into the habit of finishing games.
